Inspired by Multiverse, a massive installation by American artist Leo Villareal that features approximately 41,000 LED nodes that run through a 200-foot-long tunnel in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C..

As passerbyers move between the East and West buildings on an airport style people mover, the zillions of lights flicker on and off over head creating rhythmic patterns and abstract configurations. The custom designed software also has an element of chance built into it, so it’s unlikely that anyone will see the same routine twice. The project is Villareal’s largest and most ambitious work to date and will be on display through 2009.

The 72 x 160-foot LED wall at the center of the new Cowboys Stadium is certainly impressive enough when it’s showing game highlights or concert footage, but no giant screen ever truly earns its credentials until it’s been put to some real use: playing video games. Thankfully, Jonas Brothers video director Steve Fatone somehow pulled himself away from concert preparations to do just that earlier this week, and apparently became the first person to ever play Xbox 360 on the display in the process. As you can see above and in the gallery below, the two certainly seem to be made for each other, although it looks like the controller can get a tad touchy if you stray too far while trying to play it.

Strutting your stuff with this baby strapped to your wrist is sure to turn heads, maybe even enough to compete with the bright lights of Tokyo.

The display pushes up the top row of lights and they float back down in a real equalizer effect, finally all the lights fall down off the face of the watch to leave only two lights to indicate the time for 5 seconds, then the two lights also trail off.

The watch uses very little power for the amount of lights and is far more efficient than traditional LED watches. Note this is not an LED watch. It is an Advanced LCD using only 1 LED to light the entire watch using new technology. This is why the power consumption is low.

The Mirrored face and numbers are very eye catching. When light reflects off it you are sure to get noticed. The design was done to accommodate all sizes of wrists both big and small.

Tronic Studio is a NYC directing, design and animation studio founded in 2001 by Columbia Architecture graduates Jesse Seppi and Vivian Rosenthal. Broadcast design and are at the base of the creative collective occupying Tronic Studio. They’ve delivered unique digital visions for both RES and Creative Review, directed and animated spots for Nike, HBO, MTV and NEC, conceived and executed projects for Diesel, GE and Wired (in store) and in general, have worked to eliminate lines delineating one form of creative media output from another.

Tronic has crafted seven minutes of animated and live-action branded content for the Victory Media Network, the world’s first large-scale, outdoor digital arts gallery, in Dallas, Texas. The content, part of Target’s “Art for All” initiative, plays three times a day, as a countdown to noon, 6:00 pm and midnight, on eight huge LED screens in Victory Park, a new downtown Dallas development linked to the American Airlines Center.

Victory Park, which opened March 23, offers visitors an interactive mix of advertising, education, entertainment and art while providing brand advertisers an opportunity to create immersive environments and captivating experiences for the 17 million visitors annually expected at Victory Park.

Samsung is introducing a really cool new 30” LCD display at Cebit this week called the SyncMaster XL30. The specs claim that the display has a 3000:1 contrast ratio and a 2ms response time.

Naturally HDCP means that the display can also double as a HDTV set. The only thing that disturbs me about the display is that it seems to be a 4:3 aspect ratio design rather than a wide 16:9, which would really suck.

Rather than using the common CCFL as the source of the displays backlighting Samsung is using LED backlighting. This tech promises better color reproduction and less power consumption at the same time. No word on pricing as yet, but expect it to be near $2000 when you consider the current 30” LCD goes for $1600 without the LED backlighting.
Universal Display Corporation’s FOLED® flexible OLEDs are organic light emitting devices that are built on flexible substrates such as plastic or metallic foil. FOLED displays can offer significant performance advantages over LCD displays that are typically built on rigid glass substrates and contain a bulky backlight.
FOLEDs are thinner and lighter weight than other displays.  This means that cell phones, portable computers, wall-mounted televisions and other products that use them can also be lighter and smaller.
FOLEDs can also be more durable – less breakable and more impact resistant – than other displays.
It is built on optically-clear plastic films and thin, bendable metallic foils are currently under development at Universal Display Corporation. Such displays may be made to bend, flex and conform to many surfaces. For example, FOLEDs may someday be found affixed to curved helmet face shields, shirtsleeve cuffs and automotive instrument panels.

Barco announces that Hollywood-based XL Video has selected Barco LED, projection and image processing equipment as the focal point of The Who’s stage set for their current World Tour.  Now on its North American leg, the tour’s graphically rich production is being called “a cornucopia of visuals” by music critics and attendees alike.

Barco gear includes dual ELM R18 projectors for the center I-mag screen above the proscenium arch, two SLM R12 projectors for the side screens, and five individual 9’ x 12’ DLITE7 LED screens on stage powered by a custom G&G Motion Control System. Backstage, Barco’s ENCORE Presentation System drives the LED screens.
In terms of configuration, the five Barco DLITE screens provide the show’s creative palette, enabling a completely different physical and graphical “look” for each song.  All screens have the freedom to move both horizontally and vertically.  They can be combined into a single seamless 45’ cinemascope screen, or five individual panels at various angles, or a configuration that combines a three-panel widescreen flanked by two single panels.

Artificial light changes how we see cities, both in functional and, increasingly, in aesthetic terms. Its fascination for artists, designers and architects derives from the fundamental role played by light in human perception. Light can create spaces that exist independently of architectural constructions. Without light, images could not be generated, perceived or reproduced, in films, videos or anywhere else. The latest LED technology even permits images to be made from light. This approach has been adopted now in Munich by realizing the new OSRAM light platform SEVEN SCREENS which combines arts with cutting-edge technologies presented in the public space. In future, and up to twice a year, artists will be invited by OSRAM to develop works referring to the specific context.

Reprojected by Media artists Mader and Stublic, and architect Wiermann, based in Berlin / Karlsruhe, engages in a site-specific and medium-specific way with visual perception. The artists have created a virtual space around the seven light steles. Light apparently coming from elsewhere seems to strike the steles like a spotlight. For the viewer, real space and virtual space appear to co-exist, the two realms intersecting at the masts. Computer-generated figures appear in front of the light and are reproduced as silhouettes on the masts, before disappearing into the surrounding darkness.
project page
via: Networked Performance

On the top-floor observation deck of the Rockefeller Center in New York, a unique, interactive space has been created with the use of intelligent LED lighting supplied by Color Kinetics. Cameras track individual visitors as they move within the space, and signal the LED fixtures to create a series of individual colors and patterns.

Conceptualized by Electroland of Los Angeles, the Target Interactive Breezeway has intelligently controlled LED light fixtures on all its surfaces. Each pixel in the “intelligent skin” is composed of four iColor Cove MX units, tightly grouped. These groupings are located in all available wall and ceiling surfaces, behind translucent glass and backlit by white LED strips. Approximately 1,300 units are employed in total.

Data from four stereo video cameras is combined to locate and individually track up to 30 separate visitors as they enter and walk around the space. Upon entry each visitor is automatically assigned a “personality” by the 3-D tracking system and is in turn followed by individualized light colors and patterns.

That is very interesting, QR is also available in a unique model capable of creating a striking visual display that is part artwork, part renewable energy device, part communications medium.

Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) embedded in each of its three S-shaped blades fire in sequence as the blades rotate, painting a video screen that appears to hang in the air. This full colour and motion image is clearly visible day and night. Their display can be used either as a temporary installation at a high profile event or as a permanent feature. Early customers for quietrevolution display are mostly city councils across the UK attracted to this unique means of communicating with the local community on climate change and its solutions.

It is a 5 x 5 pixel array made out of computer fans. Each fan represents one pixel which together make a very singular display.

Déplacements consists of 24 computer case fans forming a rectangle. Each fan is a “pixel”, its number of revolutions and the intensity of the light of its LED change according to the level of gray corresponding to the pixel of reference.

This screen of fans is controlled by a computer simulating a cellular automaton entitled The game of life (devised by John Horton Conway in 1970).
During the last ten years Lightengine has developed a display management architecture, drawing from its experience with major projects, which now offers truly advanced integration of lighting, moving imagery and real time control. Using high performance, open systems-based computing and networks, and drawing upon reliability and data security techniques from the aerospace industry, Lightengine products allow ambitious and very large installations to be undertaken which would not previously have been possible.

Key to this capability is Lightengine’s Pixelbus architecture a structured approach to building and operating heterogeneous display systems for both temporary events or permanent installations quickly and reliably. Pixelbus uses industry-standard gigabit ethernet and RS-485 to connect a completely scalable network of low-cost computers – Lightengine Image Generators – with displays, enabling multi-vendor break installations to be configured quickly and easily.

Whether LED panel, DMX lighting or Lightengine’s own revolutionary Patch displays, Pixelbus reduces complex cabling, matches brightness and colour and offers the highest possible performance without any restrictions of scale or addressing. The result is that even complex installations with real time control can be built from Lightengine components without costly engineering development – integrated solutions using existing multi-vendor displays.

Taiwan-based Polo Tech, which claims a patent on rotating LED fan display technology, has plans for a USB-programmable model, although the release date is undecided, company representative Alice Wang said at Computex in Taipei. Users will be able to use an internal USB connection and software to change the fan display in real time to show their name, or any other text or simple graphics.

The fans generate the display with a rotating stick of circuit board with a vertical line of LEDs on it. This is mounted on the fan’s axis, and spins as the fan spins. Polo Tech’s driver IC can also handle simple animation, and even colour changes, given suitable LEDs. The IC also handles the precise timing calculations required to keep the display steady.
