Radios and Electronics: Starck Time and Weather Station

Philippe Starck

Design meets technology in this collaboration between Philippe Starck and Oregon Scientific. The Starck Time and Weather Station is a new combination of style and function. It includes innovative functions such as precision timing with a clock that automatically sets itself to the official U.S. atomic clock, accurate to one millionth of a second. Its cleanly partitioned LCD display features a bold time indication, and includes date, current indoor and outdoor temperature, barometric pressure with trend, humidity, moon phase, and easily recognizable icons to indicate the weather forecast for the next 12 to 24 hours. The time can be projected on a wall or ceiling, and users can choose from seven melodies for the two-minute crescendo alarm with snooze function. The digital AM/FM radio has a 16-station memory with sleep timer.

Originally a nightclub designer in the 1970s, Philippe Starck became widely known in the 1980s for projects ranging from the French president’s private headquarters to the Café Costes in Paris. When he made his curvybacked, spikelegged chair the centerpiece of design for the café in 1984, both chair and café became famous overnight. He is also known for interiors, such as the Royalton and Paramount hotels in New York and for product designs including furniture for Kartell, Driade, and Flos crystal for Daum cutlery for Sasaki and domestic wares for Alessi.

The Torre Agbar - 21st Century Illuminate Architecture

Agbar Tower

The Torre Agbar, or Agbar Tower, has been designed by French architect Jean Nouvel. It opened in June 2005 and it was inaugurated officially by the Kings of Spain on 16 September 2005.

The Torre Agbar is a colored lighting illuminate skyline that pretend to become one of the 21st century landmark of Barcelona.
The building is characterized by its nocturnal illumination: it has more than 4,000 luminous devices that use technology LED. A total of 4,500 L3 RGB lights were installed to illuminate the 32 floors of offices in the Agbar tower. The lighting system, which contains 4,500 L3 RGB lights, is controlled from a single computer.

Jean Nouvel wrote on this project: “This is not a tower, a skyscraper, in the American sense. It is a more an emergence, rising singularly in the center of a generally calm city. Unlike slender spires and bell towers that typically pierce the horizons of horizontal cities, this tower is a fluid mass that bursts through the ground like a geyser under permanent, calculated pressure.”

Transparente Headquarters Media LED Facade

media facade

Transparent mediafacade at the T-Mobile Headquater Bonn, the world first transparent mediafacade in a size of 300 square meters, being attached to a building, a fine example of a harmonius connection of architecture and media.

The aluminiumslets with the depth of 3 cm and the tickness of only 1 cm were specially designed to fit waterproof LED-cards. The large pixel distance creates the transparency of the construction.

media facade

The led modules are integrated in metal extrusions. Due to it´s brightness and it´s fast responding leds this fassade has the ability to display both, static and animated content also during daytime. Content can be updated online by ag4. Thus it is possible to meet the fast changing communication requirements for a company like T-Mobile.
Some technical Details:
Resolution: about 244 000 Pixel

LED Faucet - Nice Look for Your Kitchen

Industrial Design

The kitchen is increasingly a central gathering point in homes. Functionality and design characterize modern kitchen concepts. KWC kitchen faucets are oriented to a wide variety of customer needs and offer matchless functionality along with individual design variations.

The KWC EVE pull-out spray is integrated into the swivel spout and equipped with an LED light ring. Operating the faucets becomes an emotional experience. The light beam is activated with the press of a button. The illuminated stream of water flows into the basin and lights it and the work area in a very effective manner.
KWC EVE is available in chrome finish or stainless steel. Both materials are available with or without the LED light. Power is supplied through a standard CE approved 6,75 -volt power supply. The kitchen faucet is side operated and comes with an elegant, user-friendly lever guaranteeing a high level of comfort.

Demanding designs are always based on careful evaluation processes, market assessments, and marketing strategies. The precise implementation, however, is in the hands of the designer. The Aachen design agency NOA is responsible for the redesign of KWC EVE.

KWC EVE was awarded the international red dot design prize in February 2005.

Fashion LED Caplet

THE SOFT ELECTRIC

Gracie Kim, who recent graduate of NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program, creates the capelet that is powered by a 3V coin cell battery and 1″ x 3″ circuit board located on the back of the piece.

This thesis explores current aesthetics of wearable technology. A precept of design is that form follows function. The more emphasis placed on the technological functionality of a wearable, the more the form of the garment caters to that function. As an exploration, I’ve focused the function of my wearable solely on adornment.

The capelet was knitted and felted by hand. It is embroidered with conductive thread. The thread carries electric current to LEDs that are beaded into the embroidery, making the electronic current part of the garment’s adornment. The LED beads flicker, acting like a sequin in the light.
