Picture an electrified wind chime; as the wind blows the metal chime into contact with the metal gong, it closes a circuit.
Originally developed as a Master’s Thesis at NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program in May of 2009, Firefly installations have since been featured at multiple arena-size musical events. Firefly 870 has been exhibited at the New York Hall of Science and was featured on Kanye West’s Blog, KanyeUniverseCity.
Made of 100% sustainable wood and water-based dyes, this interactive tables are kind to the environment, and look great in you place! The entire table pulls a total of 35 watts, when it is fully active. That’s less than most common house hold light bulbs.

This Coffee Table is large enough for a big room at 62″ long by 31″ wide by 18″ high and comes with either a with a nice thick glass or plastic top, in sanded or clear. A striking wood lattice underneath, spanning the side waves, forms a strong shelf for storage.
Using a network of 32 active and passive near-infrared optical sensors, it detects motion above the table and changes in ambient light. Made of fully analog circuits, the light patterns sweep outwards from your motion with perfect fades, rippling across a pool of 480 super-bright white LEDs. It works in full sunlight or total darkness. Without motion it calms down to a very slight attractive twinkling.
check the product page

On the top-floor observation deck of the Rockefeller Center in New York, a unique, interactive space has been created with the use of intelligent LED lighting supplied by Color Kinetics. Cameras track individual visitors as they move within the space, and signal the LED fixtures to create a series of individual colors and patterns.

Conceptualized by Electroland of Los Angeles, the Target Interactive Breezeway has intelligently controlled LED light fixtures on all its surfaces. Each pixel in the “intelligent skin” is composed of four iColor Cove MX units, tightly grouped. These groupings are located in all available wall and ceiling surfaces, behind translucent glass and backlit by white LED strips. Approximately 1,300 units are employed in total.

Data from four stereo video cameras is combined to locate and individually track up to 30 separate visitors as they enter and walk around the space. Upon entry each visitor is automatically assigned a “personality” by the 3-D tracking system and is in turn followed by individualized light colors and patterns.

View the installation in action at http://electroland.net/qt_target_rock_vs02.html

TileToy is a modular, electronic game prototype for tangible LED game tiles. TileToy brings the flexibility inherent in digital software to a physical tile that people can touch and interact with. By arranging the electronic tiles, players can engage themselves in various kinds of game play, ranging from fast-paced arcade style games to puzzle an learning games.

The tiles are plastic cases approximately 2″ square. The main inspiration for the look and feel comes from the heyday of the LED, when plastic hand-held games ruled the gaming world. This retro-look is fused with a more modern minimal design. The minimalism enhances the magic of cordless boxes that simply communicate with each other. In TileToy, technology is sealed within the design. The interaction is based on tactile experience where no user manual is needed.

The re-programmable and constantly updated graphical information on each tile is displayed with a LED matrix system. The screen displaying the information is an endlessly versatile surface for updated visual communication. Each tile is controlled individually and can be used to transmit information on its own or in groups of several tiles. The assembled tiles transmit wirelessly their individual position in relation to each other and based on that changing information, a central computer, or a dedicated tile runs the different applications.

“Bion” is an interactive installation that explores the relationship between humans and artificial life. “Bion” makes reference to an individual element of primordial biological energy identified as orgone by the scientist Wilhelm Reich. The installation is composed of hundreds of mass-produced, 3-dimensional glowing and chirping sculptural forms. Each bion, measuring approximately 4x3x2 ½ inches is an synthetic “life-form” fitted with an audio speaker, blue lights (LED’s), and multiple sensors. The bions are suspended by fine gage wire connected to panels that are attached to the ceiling. When installed the panels form clusters of bions arranged at different elevations. Each bion has the ability to communicate with the others and with viewers that enter the space.

When a viewer approaches the installation space she will witness a dynamic array of blips of sound and blue light emanating in cloud like patterns from all parts of the room. She notices that the source of the light and sound come from hundreds of small organic shaped forms called bions . The bions are communicating, unaware of the approaching visitor.

James Clar of LED Voxel fame is currently working on an architecture model for the Cloud9’s ‘Habitat Hotel’. “The Habitat Hotel will be developed in the Barcelona area. It is a hotel with a light mesh that wraps the whole building. The light mesh has sensors that will read the daylight sun amplitude and then at night each node will give off color according to how much that node collected sun. Therefore, the mesh reflects the energy levels of each day, it will change over seasons and due to weather… The mesh itself is raised off the building and forms its own see-through structure. Also, each node is self-contained with it’s own sensor and LEDs, there is no central computer controlling the whole structure.”

One of their great design product is a scrolling LED message board and clock mounted behind a glass mirror. Time, date, program and save personalized messages, time triggered messages, special effects and fonts – all from the remote control or via your PC. This extra featured will help you to remind yourself to bring something important or to hurry up when you preparing to go outside.
