Munich underground – As bright as broad dayligh

The luminaires from LI-EX employ 15,000 cold-white Golden Dragon Plus LEDs and 50,000 warm-white TopLEDs in the entrance area of the new “Stachus Passagen” in Munich.

Two different LED types were installed in the process: for the facade lighting and for the architectural upgrading of the entrance area, as well as for the backlighting of a bronze-coloured glass facade, 15,000 cold-white Golden Dragon Plus LEDs were used. They supply a bright and even illumination, without scattered light or dazzle, and with low power consumption. An additional factor is the good colour rendering index of the LED light sources. This provides a natural colour impression and thus a higher level of safety, due to a more clearly contoured environment.

The handrail, 700 metres long in total, is illuminated by 50,000 warm-white TopLEDs. The LI-EX profiles are outstandingly suitable for this application. As the stairs in the entrance area are different, the length of the luminaires also needs to be adapted individually: for this type of luminaire, this is not a problem.

LI-EX is a part of “LED-Light for you”, a network for lighting technology, initiated by Osram, which works jointly with customers on implementing new solutions based on the efficient and multi-faceted light diodes; since the launch of the Stachus project, the network has been providing specialist advice to the architects, Allmann Sattler Wappner.

The new Sony 3D OLED Glasses has two 3D OLED screens and a total resolution of 1280×720 pixels gives super HD video clarity. There’s also room for both HD and 3D with these babies, and they also come with simulated 5.1 surround sound and connection to most gaming and media devices through HDMI.
The Sony representative noted the glasses would most likely utilize a HDMI connection, meaning it could work with a variety of content sources, including 3D Blu-ray players, PS3, PC, and so forth. The glasses also defeat a major problem the company faces with OLED, as large screen OLED displays are difficult to sell at reasonable prices because of the high manufacturing cost.

Cheap and super-efficient LED lights

Incandescent tungsten-filament light bulbs face a global switch-off as governments push for energy efficient fluorescent lamps to become the standard. But the light could soon go out on those lamps too, now that UK materials scientists have discovered a cheaper way to produce LED bulbs, which are three times as efficient as fluorescent lamps.

Although the ultimate dominance of LED lights has long been predicted, the expense of the super-efficient technology has made the timescale uncertain. The researchers now say LED bulbs based on their new process could be commercially available within five years.

Gallium nitride (GaN) LEDs have many advantages over compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and incandescent bulbs. They switch on instantly, with no gradual warm-up, and can burn for an average of 100,000 hours before they need replacing – 10 times as long as fluorescent lamps and some 130 times as long as an incandescent bulb. CFLs also contain small levels of mercury, which makes environmentally-friendly disposal of spent bulbs difficult.

The Anemix :: 3D Effects Lighting System

TheANEMIX is a new lighting system that creates unique 3D effects in space.
ItÂ´s a panel composed by a luminescent and a reflective layer, which can be modified to create a wide range of visual effects.
The designers chose OSRAM LED technology to be the light source of this system, as itÂ´s efficient, small and with a very low cost of manteinance. The glass-aluminium technology was developed by GLASSTECH, a specialized glazed Chilean company.
This modular system can also be customized. The tecnology used to make the shapes matrix and modular dimensions allows anyone to design their own Anemix. In this way and depending on the format and dimension, it can be used as object, as a comunication or mood light surface or as an architectural element.

Strutting your stuff with this baby strapped to your wrist is sure to turn heads, maybe even enough to compete with the bright lights of Tokyo.

The display pushes up the top row of lights and they float back down in a real equalizer effect, finally all the lights fall down off the face of the watch to leave only two lights to indicate the time for 5 seconds, then the two lights also trail off.

The watch uses very little power for the amount of lights and is far more efficient than traditional LED watches. Note this is not an LED watch. It is an Advanced LCD using only 1 LED to light the entire watch using new technology. This is why the power consumption is low.

The Mirrored face and numbers are very eye catching. When light reflects off it you are sure to get noticed. The design was done to accommodate all sizes of wrists both big and small.

Laws of Motion in Origin by Leo Villareal

To create this new work, Villareal integrated physicist Issac Newton’s Laws of Motion into his own computer code, augmenting his earlier explorations of rule-based cellular automata programs that were inspired by mathematician John Conway’s Game of Life. By applying principles of physics, the artist has increased the complexity of his simulated worlds. As the elements move within the large matrix of white LED’s (light emitting diodes),Villareal’s encompassing patterns evoke stars swirling in space and at other passages biological interactions deep within the body. Lively interactions between objects in Orign’s matrix generate visual stimuli pulsing with energy suggestive of specific behavior and personality.

“I am very inspired essential questions like ‘How does life begin?’ Villareal explains, referencing both studies in the birth of the universe as well as cellular processes such as fertilization and cell division in his patterning. “I liked the minimal feel of my last show Horizon, here in 2004, yet the experience of the new piece will be like seeing a very zoomed up view of my worlds. Origin’s scale within the gallery will create a sense of immersion, like being in a giant microscope or scientific instrument,” comments the artist on the relationship of the new work to his earlier installation.
